Modern hearing aids are complex and custom-made digital electroacoustic devices that can be computer programmed to amplify sounds at certain frequencies. While the technology used in digital hearing aids has dramatically increased in the last fifty years, all hearing instruments retain the same basic functions and pieces.

Basic Hearing Aid Functions:
In all hearing aids sound waves enter through the microphone, which converts acoustic signals into electrical signals or pulses. The amplifier then increases the strength of the electrical signal and cleans up any noise it detects. This electrical signal is then converted back into an acoustic signal so that the user can hear it. The receiver then channels the sound into the ear canal. A battery supplies the needed power for these conversion processes. Many digital hearing aids also have many features and controls like toggle switch, volume control wheels, push buttons, remote controls, and directional microphones that enable the wearer to hear better in different listening environments.

Hearing Aid Styles
All of theses styles differ in size and function. Some are so small that no one can even tell you are wearing a hearing aid; some are so powerful that even the most profound hearing loss can be helped. The right hearing aid for you depends on the technology level you need, your hearing loss, your hearing needs, your lifestyle, your budget, and personal preference. Larger hearing aids typically have larger batteries which can last longer than smaller hearing aids. A traditional BTE delivers the sound via a small tube into a custom fit earmold. A more recent innovation is called open ear technology and receiver in canal technology. In these two styles the sound is delivered via a very thin tube into an earbud which is a small, flexible, and comfortable piece. This type of system provides enhanced natural sound quality for both outside sounds and your own voice.

ITE
In-The-Ear (ITE) hearing aids are very easy to operate even if the user has poor dexterity. The hearing device is housed within a custom-made shell that fits comfortably inside each ear and delivers sound directly to the ear. This hearing aid typically fills the outer part of the ear.

ITC
In-The-Canal (ITC) hearing aids can barely be seen and are very easy to operate, even if the user has poor dexterity. The hearing device is housed within a custom-made shell that fits comfortably inside each ear canal and delivers sound directly to the ear.

CIC
CIC hearing aids are virtually invisible to others. The hearing device is housed in a tiny shell that fits comfortably and completely into each ear canal. The device is removed from the ear canal by pulling a tiny cord. Where these miniature instruments are both powerful and cosmetically appealing, some features- like volume control, are not available simply because the devices are so small. This style is available with traditional small vents, or with larger vents that provide an open ear feeling.

I recently saw an advertisement that said, “save up to $6,000 on a set of digital hearing aids." How is that possible when the most expensive hearing aids sell for around $6,000 for a binaural, two hearing aids, set? The answer is simple. The consumer, or patient, is led to believe, by deceptive advertising, that the regular price is much higher than it actually is. The hearing aid dealer then offers a huge discount, or a buy one, get one free coupon suggesting to the patient significant price reductions.

The truth behind the perceived high prices for hearing aids lies in the tactics used to sell hearing aids. The tactic is an old one, and is used in many consumer goods. The suggested retail price is significantly inflated; the dealer will then advertise a HUGE discount to the instruments which when applied to the inflated retail price discounts the aids to current market prices.

While we are talking about deceptive ads, there have been many advertisements suggesting, “we sell the only hearing aids manufactured in Utah,” or, “we manufacture the only hearing aids made in Utah." In reality there are no hearing aids manufactured anywhere in the state of Utah.

Many people are led to believe Sonic Innovations, a digital hearing aid manufacturer, manufactures their aids right here in Utah. In reality Sonic Innovations corporate and research facilities are housed in Utah, however they do not manufacture instruments.

I’ve recently been experiencing the acquisition of a new set of hearing aids, two Widex Inteos. I had my previous hearing aid (Oticon Adapto) for about 5-6 years, and it was conking out on me, sputtering from repair to repair. I finally made the decision to go for hearing aids in both ears (binaural), which has been long recommended to me by audiologists. I understood the argument behind it very well, in that your ears and brain are designed to hear in stereo, and so trying to get amplification through just one ear was providing a lot less improvement than I could be getting. The benefit of two aids over one is supposed to be an exponential improvement.

But as a longtime user of hearing aids, I want to make a few observations about what I see as the significant obstacles to getting, using, and enjoying the benefit of hearing aids. These are the barriers that made me wait a lot longer than I should have to get a hearing aid in the first place, and have prevented me from trying two aids until now.

First, there’s the cost/investment side. Widex Hearing Aids, particularly the new digital technologies, are extremely expensive. The type that my hearing loss requires usually run in the neighborhood of $2,500-3,000. Each. Multiply that times two, and you’re talking about wearing an enormous sum in delicate electronic devices on your head (which are subject to damage or breakage from dropping or getting caught on something, getting wet, or being exposed to radiation or chemicals.) In short, the value of a mid-range Rolex, with none of the durability. And the standard hearing aid is not expected to have a shelf life beyond 5 years. That’s an investment of $100 a month, if you’re lucky enough not to break or lose one during that time. And no, health insurance does not cover hearing aids and the warranties typically cover only the first 1-2 years. Therefore, there is a strong financial consideration to be made between making do with just one hearing aid, or splurging on two.

Second, there is the appearance/design factor. I’ve been wearing hearing aids since I started college. I have been hard of hearing my whole life, but I had learned enough coping strategies as a child, like lipreading and defaulting to writing and pictures whenever possible, that I was able to compensate fairly well through my school years with the help of teachers and friends. That changed when I went out into the larger world, away from home and familiar surroundings.
